General Conditions

As an international student, you can also study at Brno University of Technology in Czech language. The same conditions regarding admission and studying will apply to you. This means that you will not need to pay any study fees, however you will have to prove your knowledge of the Czech language. You can apply for a year-long intensive course of Czech language for foreigners which is organized by the Lifelong Learning Institute at BUT. Organization of Studies

Students at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA) of Brno University of Technology can select from 17 studios that cover many fields of study (painting, sculpture, graphics and drawing, graphic design, product design, conceptual trends, environment, moving image, game design, performance, photography). Any student joins one studio and does most of his/her work and study in the course called “Studio”. For this “Studio” course, the student gets 30 ECTS credits per year, having passed a “studio exam” at the end of each semester, i. e. two exams per year. This exam consists in a presentation of a final semester project before a committee, sometimes including presentation of works created during the whole semester. Besides this course, a Czech-speaking student attends 5–8 other courses for which s/he gets 2–5 credits per semester per each course. During four years of the bachelor studies each student has to get at least 240 credits in total and during two years of master studies at least 120 credits, therefore the optimum number of credits per year is 60.

Application Procedures

Foreign applicants who are able to study in Czech (at B1 level at least) can be accepted as full-time students under the same terms as Czech students, i.e. no tuition fee is required – see information for Czech students.

Admissions Information

The e-application is submitted both electronically and in a printed form. The e-application must be usually submitted during October and November for the applicants to the BA programme and in July for the applicants to the MA programme. The applicant can only choose one studio in which s/he applies. The admission fee is 28 EUR for either of the programs. The fee is non-refundable.

BA applicants

Deadline for BA applicants is 30 Nov. The following materials must be submitted to the Office for Study Affairs by the given deadline:

• CV (which must be uploaded in a PDF format to the e-application form as well);
• portfolio (which must be uploaded in a PDF or ZIP format to the e-application form as well);
• As a foreign student you will need to validate your previous education so that you can start studying at Brno University of Technology. See what is necessary to start the process of recognition of foreign education.

The invitation for entrance exams will be sent by mail to those applicants who have fulfilled all conditions stated above.

The entrance exam for the BA programme has two parts. The first part takes place at the beginning of January. A committee selects applicants (their portfolios) who will be invited for the second interview at the beginning of February. The interview takes two days and consists of fulfilling four art-based assignments and writing an art history test. A committee chooses the final number of successful applicants and recommends them to the Dean who makes the final decision about admitting the applicants.

MA applicants

This admission procedure is open to applicants who have successfully completed a BA or higher degree programme at a higher education institution or a tertiary professional school compliant comparable with the degree programs provided at the FFA BUT. Applicants must submit:

• CV (which must be uploaded in a PDF format to the e-application form as well);
• A cover letter including a statement of intent for the first semester of the MA programme (must be uploaded in PDF format into the e-application as well);
• As a foreign student you will need to validate your previous education so that you can start studying at Brno University of Technology. See what is necessary to start the process of recognition of foreign education.

The invitation for entrance exams will be sent by mail to those applicants who have fulfilled all conditions stated above. The entrance exam for the MA programme take place in September and has two parts. The exam consists of two parts conducted in one day. All applicants are invited by mail to take the first, review part of the exam, which starts in the morning. The first part: review. Applicants will present their work or its documentation and their statement of intent to the committee. The committee will recommend the selected applicants to a further interview, which will take place later during the same day. The Dean makes the final decision about admitting each applicant according to the recommendation of the committee.

PhD applicants

The admissions procedure for both accredited forms of postgradual studies (full-time and distance) takes place during the same day (usually in the second half of April). The entrance exam consists of an interview during which the applicants are asked about their theoretical knowledge of the field, their artistic practice, its results and public reflection (bibliography).
